Afrosonica : tracing the roots of black music
The Museum of Ethnography in Geneva pays tribute to Africa and its diasporas with Afrosonica, an immersive exhibition where the sonic memories of the continent come alive.

With Afrosonica, the Museum of Ethnography in Geneva (MEG) offers a unique dive into the soundscapes of Africa and its diasporas. Drawing on over 20,000 hours of recordings from the International Archives of Popular Music, the exhibition celebrates the rich heritage of Black music, from ancestral traditions to modern expressions.
An invitation to listen differently
Visitors are immersed in a sensory journey featuring thousand-year-old harps, meditative lamellophones, rare archives, and contemporary sound installations. It’s an invitation to listen differently and experience the intricate layers of a sound world shaped by humans, nature, rituals, and migration.
Afrosonica also explores the flow of rhythms, sounds, and instruments across continents, highlighting the profound global influence of African cultures on music. Running through January 4, 2026, this six-month exhibition is a call to open your ears—and your mind.
