Libya Exchange between Macron and Al-Sissi
Emmanuel Macron spoke on the phone with the Egyptian president on December 30. The two heads of state discussed the situation in Libya. They believed that the risks of a military escalation required that all international and Libyan actors exercise the utmost restraint. They agreed to act in close coordination with a view to the Berlin conference and to facilitate a decisive relaunch of the inter-Libyan negotiations. They expressed their desire that a political agreement be found within the framework of the United Nations, in accordance with the principles agreed in Paris, Palermo and Abu Dhabi, in order to restore the unity and full sovereignty of Libya. The President of the Republic and his Egyptian counterpart also discussed the situation in the eastern Mediterranean and considered that the memorandum of understanding between Turkey and Libya on the delimitation of their maritime jurisdictions was contrary to the law of the sea. They agreed to stay in close touch on this. The two heads of state exchanged on all the subjects included in the dialogue of confidence between France and Egypt, in particular the question of human rights, and the main challenges of bilateral cooperation. They will talk about it very soon.
