Climate: Kenya, Egypt and Uganda deploy first space-based climate monitoring system

Kenya, Egypt and Uganda launched in April 2026 an African-built climate monitoring payload to the International Space Station, marking a major step toward technological sovereignty. The system uses artificial intelligence to track floods, droughts and agricultural stress in real time. According to the Organisation météorologique mondiale, extreme climate events have increased across Africa in recent decades, highlighting the need for locally driven data and early warning systems.
