Ghana : parliament votes to abolish the death penalty
The parliament of the West African country of Ghana voted to abolish the death penalty. Members of parliament decided to remove the death penalty from the country’s codes. The last time a death sentence was carried out in Ghana was in 1993.
However, the death penalty can only be completely abolished once Ghana’s constitution has been amended. According to the Prison Service, 172 prisoners are currently on death row in Ghana.
23 of the 55 African countries have completely abolished the death penalty from their legislation.
