Energy : EU commits €545 million to boost Africa’s clean energy transition

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a €545 million package from Team Europe to accelerate Africa’s shift toward clean energy. The initiative, unveiled via video during the Global Citizen Festival at the UN General Assembly, is part of the “Scaling Up Renewables in Africa” campaign co-led with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The campaign aims to raise global awareness and mobilize investment for clean energy access across Africa, where nearly 600 million people still lack electricity.
A high-level event will conclude the campaign during the G20 Summit in South Africa on November 22–23, 2025.
