USA/Africa : Kamala Harris announces over $1 billion for African women

On Wednesday 29 March 2023, in Ghana, during the first leg of her African tour, which will also take her to Tanzania and Zambia, the American vice-president, Kamala Harris, announced a one billion dollar initiative for the economic emancipation of African women.

The private sector will contribute $928 million. This includes $528 million for women’s economic empowerment and $400 million to « help bridge the digital divide between men and women ».

In addition, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide $60 million for a Women in the Digital Economy Fund. Finally, the US government will mobilize $47 million for gender equality programs.
