Egypt : trachoma eliminated as a public health problem

On 12 November 2025, WHO validated that Egypt has eliminated trachoma as a public health problem, becoming the seventh country in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and the 27th globally to achieve this milestone. The success follows 20 years of coordinated efforts by the Ministry of Health and WHO using the SAFE strategy—Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, Environmental improvement—with technical and financial support from partners including Haya Karima Foundation, Sightsavers, and the International Trachoma Initiative.
