Ethiopia and the IMF discussing a new financing program

According to local official sources, a team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been discussing a new financing program with the authorities for a few days.

This is in response to Addis Ababa’s official request for IMF assistance to finance the reconstruction of its infrastructure and strengthen its foreign exchange reserves. This follows the two-year conflict between the central government and rebel groups in the Tigray region. The conflict has had a negative impact on the Ethiopian economy, which needs financing for post-conflict reconstruction to the tune of $20 billion.

As a reminder, in 2021, the World Bank and the IMF suspended their aid to Ethiopia following human rights violations and war crimes in the Tigray region denounced by the UN.
