Rwanda : African Development Bank commits $33.64M to boost biomedical education and digital health skills

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) Board approved US $29.85 million in funding for Phase II of Rwanda’s Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Engineering and e-Health, part of a US $33.64 million project to build advanced skills and strengthen the national healthcare system.

The financing includes US $24.64 million from the African Development Fund and US $5.21 million from AfDB, with the government of Rwanda covering the remainder. This initiative aligns with Rwanda’s long-term strategy to develop a knowledge-based economy and resilient health services by 2030.

Located at Kigali Innovation City, the project will upgrade academic programs, laboratories and equipment to train 470 students in biomedical engineering, digital health and rehabilitation sciences and strengthen PhD-level academic training.

It also enhances regional integration within the East African Community, promotes international research partnerships and establishes a Biomedical Innovation Park to enable students, researchers and private companies to develop health technologies tailored to local needs.
