South Africa : The African Development Bank approves $140m loan to Johannesburg for urban infrastructure

On 21 January 2026, the African Development Bank approved a ZAR 2.5 billion senior unsecured loan to the City of Johannesburg to support its capital expenditure needs. The financing is dedicated to commercial urban services projects in electricity, water and sanitation, and solid waste management. Investments focus largely on brownfield and former industrial sites, with several projects already under implementation, aiming to strengthen urban resilience and ensure reliable delivery of basic services.
