Xposure 2024 Mário Macilau : “The possibility to narrate our own story”

Mario Macilau, a Mozambican photographer, traces his passion for photography back to his childhood, inspired by local photographers who, post-independence, primarily served as commercial photographers in Mozambique.

Fascinated by the camera’s ability to compress people, objects, and stories, Macilau was driven by curiosity to understand this magic. Despite lacking formal artistic training, he embarked on a journey, initially considering photography as a pleasurable activity.

About three to four years ago, Macilau initiated a project focused on Mozambique’s post-colonial heritage, exploring collective memory and its interaction with traces left by colonialism. Diving into colonialism’s impact on the environment, he worked with buildings, local communities, and examined the maritime aspect. His work resonates beyond Mozambique, reflecting a broader African quest to understand colonial legacies and their contemporary implications.

Macilau emphasizes the importance of African storytellers, stressing the need for Africans to narrate their own stories. He believes that true liberation entails Africans taking control of their narratives. Despite challenges faced by African photographers, including financial constraints, he advocates for collective support and autonomy. He underscores the importance of restoring local support systems, rather than solely relying on external funding.

In light of COVID-19’s economic impact on the artistic sector, Macilau highlights the need for resilience and mutual support within African artistic communities. He encourages a shift in focus from monetary concerns to passion for the craft, suggesting that financial rewards will naturally follow dedication and quality work.

Macilau’s photography transcends mere imagery; it serves as a means to reclaim narratives, foster resilience, and advocate for autonomy within the African artistic landscape.
