US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called on the international community to provide debt relief to African counties.
She was speaking on January 20 in Dakar, Senegal where she kicked off a trip to Africa that will also take her to Zambia and South Africa. Yellen said « debt relief is in the interest of both debtors and creditors ».
« Countries need to be wary of shiny deals that may be opaque and ultimately fail to actually benefit the people they were purportedly designed to help in the first place, » she added, hinting at China.
