On March 26, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade and slavery of Africans as “the most serious crimes against humanity.” The text passed with 123 votes in favor, 3 against, and 52 abstentions. According to the UN, over 15 million people were deported between the 16th and 19th centuries. Backed notably by Ghana, the move revives discussions on reparative justice, though no financial mechanism has been defined.
