UN : Global hunger declines slightly in 2024 but Africa and Asia face sharp rise

An estimated 673 million people suffered hunger in 2024, down from 2023 and 2022, according to the UN’s SOFI 2025 report published 28 July 2025 by five specialized agencies of the United Nations. Southern Asia and Latin America saw notable improvements, but hunger rose across Africa and Western Asia. Africa’s undernourishment surpassed 20%, affecting 307 million people. High food prices and crises continue to slow recovery. The UN warns nearly 60% of the 2030 hunger burden could fall on Africa, threatening SDG 2.
