Uganda : spectacular increase in gold exports
In 2023, gold exports in Uganda skyrocketed to $2.3 billion, marking a 1043% increase from 2022, as reported by the Central Bank. The commissioning of the new Wagagai Mining refinery in the eastern part of the country and the suspension of gold export duties contributed to this growth, according to experts. In 2020, gold exports had already surpassed those of coffee, Uganda’s main export revenue source.
