Uganda : digital shilling pilot backed by government bonds

Uganda has launched a central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot, a tokenized version of the shilling issued via the Global Settlement Network. The token is backed by Ugandan Treasury bonds and forms part of a broader $5.5 billion real-world asset tokenization program spanning agro hubs, mining, and solar farms. The initiative aims to boost financial inclusion, streamline payments, and attract investment.
