The Climate Change Performance Index 2024 : Morocco in the world’s top 10

Again, no country performs well enough in all categories to achieve an overall “very high” rating in the index. Therefore, the first three ranks in the overall ranking remain empty. Denmark reaches the best ranking, followed by Estonia in 5th place and the Philippines in 6th place in this year’s CCPI. China, the largest emitter, remains in 51st place, while the US has even dropped five places since last year (now 57th). The host of COP28, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, and Saudi Arabia form the bottom trio (ranked 65th to 67th).
Morocco ranks 9th in the world and first in Africa and the Arab world. The country stands out for its low greenhouse gas emissions, controlled energy consumption and significant progress in renewable energy production. However, dependence on fossil fuels remains high, leaving room for improvement.
Next among the African countries is Nigeria in 17th place, and Egypt in 22nd.
Published annually since 2005, the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) is an independent monitoring tool that tracks the climate protection performance of 63 countries and the EU. It aims to enhance transparency in international climate politics and enables comparison of climate protection efforts and progress made by individual countries.
