Fed Africa, a recruitment firm specializing in Top & Middle Management functions in Africa and the Middle East, has published the results of its annual survey on the job search on the African continent. For its survey, the firm questioned 343 candidates who are currently working or seeking jobs on their vision of the dynamism of the job market in Africa.

When asked about their search perimeter, 43% of the respondents indicated that they were looking for opportunities across the African continent. Another 27% said they were mobile in several African and Middle Eastern regions. A trend that is confirmed.

They cite varying reasons, such as the continent’s strong development, investment opportunities, the continent’s natural resources, the skills of local populations, and the living environment.

As for their vision of the job market in Africa and the Middle East, 48% of respondents indicate that the market is rather stable compared to previous years, despite the COVID-19 crisis. While the offer is not necessarily abundant in all sectors of activity, they can nevertheless find interesting ones on a regular basis.

“Recruitment firms are also as close as possible to the realities of the market”

Thus, the panel detailed the means they use to find new professional opportunities on the continent. 76% indicate that they submit a CV to a recruitment agency or approach a headhunter. This practice can often be explained by the consulting aspect of these structures, which accompany candidates in their job search.

« Beyond the advice that recruitment experts can give on how to present a CV or highlight skills, recruitment firms are also as close as possible to the realities of the market. For executive profiles, where recruitment often takes place outside of traditional job search platforms, trusting a recruitment firm allows you to access offers that are silent or that have not yet been disclosed on the market,” says Deffa KA, Fed Africa manager.

It should be noted that the respondents also state that they are regularly contacted by recruiters and headhunters. They are 63% to have been contacted between two and five times for a new professional opportunity in the last twelve months.

Compensation: a challenge for companies seeking to recruit talent

The survey also reveals a number of other findings. While compensation is cited by 74% as an important lever for selecting an opportunity, it is outstripped by the interest of the assignments (77%) and the suitability of the position for a personal and/or professional project (75%). It should be noted that the benefits offered by the company, in addition to the salary, are cited by 55% of respondents.

“Unsurprisingly, compensation is a major criterion for executive profiles and an issue for companies seeking to recruit talent for companies,” says Maymouna Mauvois, manager at Fed Africa. However, it is often on social or in-kind benefits that companies can make a difference.
