South Africa : $2.6 billion to boost energy transition

On June 17, 2025, South Africa secured $2.6 billion to support its energy transition, including an initial $500 million tranche from a World Bank-linked climate fund to be released promptly. This aid comes despite delays in phasing out coal, which still accounts for 80% of electricity production. Eskom, the state utility, aims to retire coal plants by 2042.
