New African ranking of the 100 most influential Africans : a celebration of leadership and innovation
New African Magazine has recently unveiled its annual list of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2024, highlighting visionary leaders who are shaping Africa's economic, political, and social future.

The London-based New African Magazine has published its annual list of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2024. This ranking celebrates the extraordinary achievements and contributions of African figures from various sectors who have had a positive impact on the continent and the world over the past year. This recognition goes beyond just a ranking; it is described by one of the magazine’s readers as « large family get-together, where we come together at the end of the year and share their various achievements throughout the year. »
» I had never thought of our 100 Most Influential Africans (MIA) feature in quite that way but now I think our friend has really nailed it and given it a special African flavour, the Ubuntu motto – I am because we are. We need this because I cannot recall the world being so polarised, so divided, so stone-faced in the face of terrible man-made atrocities”, said Anver Versi, editor of New African.
Entrepreneurs shaping Africa’s economic future
These leaders, hailing from various sectors, embody the innovation and dynamism that are driving Africa’s global presence. Among them, prominent figures stand out for their impact and vision.
Aliko Dangote, the Nigerian magnate and president of Dangote Group, remains a key figure. His industrial empire, spanning from cement to agribusiness, makes him one of the most influential men on the continent. He is not only a model of success in Africa but also a key player in the industrialization and job creation in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Akinwumi Adesina, president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), is another major figure on this list. His role in supporting large-scale development projects, particularly in agriculture, energy, and infrastructure, is essential to the continent’s progress. As he himself emphasizes, “Africa needs innovative and sustainable solutions to support its economic growth. We must invest in agriculture, energy, and infrastructure to build a better future.”
Samaila Zubairu, CEO of the African Finance Corporation, is another important name, mobilizing essential funds for Africa’s economic growth. He tirelessly works to raise the necessary financing for the development of vital infrastructure across the continent.
Innovation and female leadership
This year’s ranking also highlights women who are breaking glass ceilings. Tariye Gbadegesin, CEO of the Climate Investment Fund, embodies female leadership in a critical sector. Her work aims to finance sustainable projects to combat climate change. As she stated in an interview: “Climate change is a global crisis, but Africa has a key role to play as both a vulnerable and solution-providing continent.”
In the tech field, Olugbenga Agboola, co-founder of Flutterwave, has revolutionized the digital payments landscape in Africa. Flutterwave facilitates cross-border transactions and boosts continental trade, thereby strengthening its role in Africa’s digital economic transformation.
Abuja: A nerve center for business
The entrepreneurial dynamism observed in Africa is also reflected in the rise of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, as a key hub for business and innovation in Africa. This development is further reinforced by the presence of entrepreneurs like Adebayo Ogunlesi, managing partner of Global Infrastructure Partners, and Wale Tinubu, CEO of Oando Group. These figures promote strategic partnerships to support the modernization of African economies, particularly in the infrastructure and energy sectors.
More than just a ranking…
Strategic partnerships between private and public sector leaders play a fundamental role in Africa’s future. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, president of Access Holdings and Coronation Group, along with Tunde Olanrewaju, senior partner at McKinsey, are perfect examples of this synergy between expertise and investment. Their work is critical in guiding African businesses toward sustainable and inclusive growth.
The idea behind the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2024 list is not just about rankings but a true celebration of leadership, innovation, and social commitment. It highlights the diversity of talent and skills present across the continent while showcasing success models in sectors as varied as finance, agriculture, energy, technology, education, and infrastructure.
Through these profiles, the magazine presents a dynamic, resilient, and forward-looking Africa. These leaders inspire future generations and demonstrate that, despite the challenges, Africa is a fertile ground for innovative ideas and large-scale projects.
