Namibia : $10 billion investment in green hydrogen

Namibia announces a major $10 billion green hydrogen project aimed at harnessing its solar potential to produce clean hydrogen and becoming a key player in the global energy transition.

Namibia, land of vast deserts and abundant natural resources, is embarking on an ambitious endeavor to become a major player in green hydrogen. Under the high patronage of King Philippe of Belgium, in early May, the Namib Desert witnessed the inauguration of an innovative project aimed at decarbonizing the European industry and boosting the national economy. Bloomberg reports that this project, named Cleanergy Solutions, marks the beginning of a significant energy transformation for Namibia, with notable financial support from the European Investment Bank, the Netherlands, and Germany.

A colossal investment for staggering potential

Cleanergy Solutions, a collaboration between the Belgian shipping company Compagnie Maritime Belge SA (CMB) and the Namibian group Ohlthaver & List, is part of a broader vision to harness Namibia’s ideal conditions for green hydrogen production. With vast land, exceptional solar irradiation, and favorable winds, the country is positioning itself as a leading player in this field. The green hydrogen produced will be transported to Europe, notably via the Antwerp-Bruges port, paving the way for a dynamic and decarbonized regional economy.

The economic and environmental potential is immense : job creation, economic growth, and a significant contribution to combating climate change

However, this energy transition is not without challenges. In addition to the massive investments required, especially for infrastructure and local workforce training, Namibia must navigate carefully in a complex global energy landscape, while overcoming the historical legacies of colonization. Nevertheless, the economic and environmental potential is immense: job creation, economic growth, and a significant contribution to combating climate change.

The vision of a green hydrogen superpower

Namibia aims not only to become a green hydrogen producer but also aspires to be a superpower in this field. Through an ambitious national strategy, the country aims not only to decarbonize its economy but also to become a major exporter of clean energy. This vision is supported by a strong commitment to research and development, as well as strategic international partnerships. Towards a sustainable bioeconomy

This green hydrogen project is part of a broader energy transition in Namibia, where the country is diversifying its economy and reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. With recent discoveries of oil and gas, the country adeptly balances its energy ambitions between tradition and innovation. Green hydrogen thus represents a crucial step towards a more sustainable future for Namibia and the world.

In addition to its commitment to green hydrogen, Namibia is taking another step towards a sustainable future with the launch of its bioeconomy strategy. This strategy, unveiled at COP27, embodies the vision of economic growth harmonized with environmental preservation. With considerable bioeconomic potential, Namibia is positioning itself as a leader in the transition to a greener and more sustainable economy.

In summary, through its bold initiatives in energy and the bioeconomy, Namibia is carving out a prominent place in the global landscape, embodying the vision of a greener and more promising energy and economic future.
