Mali : Major Gold refinery project launched to boost economic sovereignty

On June 16, 2025, President Assimi Goïta laid the foundation stone of a new gold refinery in Bamako, spanning 5 hectares with an annual capacity of 200 tons. Operated by SOROMA-SA (62% state-owned) in partnership with Russian firm Yadran, the refinery aims to locally process Mali’s gold production (51 tons in 2024). Valued at over $200 million, the project strengthens traceability and mining revenue control amid reforms and challenges, including Barrick Gold’s suspension.
