Kenya : suspension of import taxes on grains following traders’ protests

The Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (Kephis) has suspended physical testing, examination, and inspection fees on grain imports and exports until March 2025 due to opposition from traders. Kephis’ Director-General, Theophilus Mutui, who met with stakeholders on Tuesday, also stated that the fees would be revised downward before their implementation. This is the second time Kephis has suspended the fees. The majority of traders said they were unwilling to pay additional taxes, as it would increase the cost of doing business.
