Kenya : AfDB approves $16.5M to boost Menengai geothermal project

On January 22, 2026, the Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group approved a $16.5 million loan to support the 35 MW OrPower Twenty‑Two (OTTL) geothermal power plant in the Menengai field near Nakuru. The project complements two other 35 MW plants and unlocks 105 MW in the first phase of the field, building on a previous $145 million financing to Geothermal Development Company (GDC) for steam supply to private developers.

Electricity will be sold under a 25‑year PPA to Kenya Power and Lighting Company, with expected annual generation of ≈301 GWh, lower tariffs and about 1.9 million tonnes of CO₂ avoided. The AfDB financing supports Kenya’s Mission 300 Energy Compact to grow geothermal capacity toward 1,824 MW by 2030, with total project debt expected at $64.4 million of an estimated $91.9 million cost, including additional financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
