On 20 January 2026, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and OpenAI announced the Horizon1000 initiative, a $50 million partnership to strengthen primary healthcare across Africa using artificial intelligence.
Beginning in Rwanda, the programme aims to equip 1,000 primary healthcare clinics with AI tools by 2028 to support frontline health workers in patient intake, clinical documentation, triage and referral decisions, reduce administrative burdens and improve access in under‑resourced settings.
