Guinea : ECOWAS lifts all sanctions after successful democratic transition

On 28 January 2026, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) officially lifted all remaining sanctions against the Republic of Guinea, ending over four years of restrictive measures imposed after the 2021 military coup. The decision was made at an extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government following a transition process recognized as complete.

The move follows a constitutional referendum on 21 September 2025, the presidential election on 28 December 2025, and the inauguration of President Mamadi Doumbouya on 17 January 2026, benchmarks seen as restoring constitutional order.

ECOWAS also fully reinstated Guinea in all its decision‑making bodies and regional integration mechanisms and urged the government to deepen national dialogue, social cohesion, democracy, good governance, and socio‑economic development ahead of upcoming legislative elections.
