Global AI Summit in Africa : Kigali at the heart of artificial intelligence challenges
As artificial intelligence is expected to add $2.9 trillion to the African economy by 2030, Kigali will host the first Global AI Summit in Africa on April 3-4, 2025. This unique opportunity will bring together policymakers, entrepreneurs, and researchers to discuss the opportunities and challenges of this technological revolution.

Africa, with the fastest-growing workforce in the world, is positioning itself as a key player in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem. Many sectors on the continent are already benefiting from this technology. In agriculture, AI tools optimize yields by analyzing weather conditions and soil quality. In healthcare, AI-assisted diagnostics help compensate for the shortage of medical professionals. However, despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in governance, ethics, and infrastructure.
We need to pioneer new approaches and forge transformative partnerships to harness AI for Africa’s inclusive growth, and create a safe and secure digital future for all

The Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR), which plays a key role in structuring the AI ecosystem in Africa, is one of the main organizers of the summit. Created in partnership with the World Economic Forum, C4IR has established its headquarters in Kigali to support innovation and assist African countries in adopting new technologies. It works to develop regulatory frameworks and strategic initiatives that facilitate the rise of AI across the continent. « We need to pioneer new approaches and forge transformative partnerships to harness AI for Africa’s inclusive growth, and create a safe and secure digital future for all, » emphasizes a report from C4IR.
The event, organized in collaboration with Rwanda’s Ministry of ICT & Innovation and the World Economic Forum, will be held under the theme: « AI and Africa’s Demographic Dividend: Reimagining Economic Opportunities for Africa’s Workforce. » It will bring together over 1,000 participants from 95 countries, including heads of state, policymakers, business leaders, investors, startups, and researchers. Notable speakers include Strive Masiyiwa, Executive Chairman of Econet Group and Cassava Technologies, Dr. James Manyika, Senior Vice President of Google and Alphabet, Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, as well as representatives from the African Union and the United Nations such as Amandeep Singh Gill and Doreen Bogdan-Martin.

Maximizing AI’s tremendous benefits and mitigating its inherent risks will require multi-stakeholder engagement and inclusive dialogue
Rwanda’s selection as the host country underscores its pioneering role in AI on the continent. With support from C4IR, Kigali has launched several digital transformation projects, particularly in cybersecurity, smart agriculture, and the digitization of public services. This momentum serves as a model for other African nations seeking to leverage AI to modernize their economies.
Over two days, the summit discussions will address crucial topics such as job creation through AI, the necessary infrastructure for its adoption, digital sovereignty, and the ethical governance of new technologies. « Maximizing AI’s tremendous benefits and mitigating its inherent risks will require multi-stakeholder engagement and inclusive dialogue, » the organizers emphasize. Kigali is thus positioning itself as a catalyst for Africa’s digital transformation, paving the way for greater AI integration in service of the continent’s development.
