Ghana : to table UN resolution declaring transatlantic slave trade “gravest crime”

On February 15, 2026 in Addis Ababa, President John Dramani Mahama announced that Ghana, backed by the African Union, will table a landmark resolution at the UN General Assembly on March 25, 2026 to have the transatlantic slave trade and racialized enslavement recognised as “the gravest crime against humanity.”
The resolution, grounded in historical accuracy, solid legal basis and continental and diaspora alignment, was unanimously endorsed at the AU’s 39th summit. Ghana plans diplomatic consultations in New York with blocs including the Group of 77 and the Non‑Aligned Movement to build broad support. Mahama stressed the initiative aims at “truth, recognition and reconciliation,” not targeting specific states.
