Ghana : strategic railway programme unveiled to modernise national transport

On February 10, 2026 in Accra, the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) unveiled a strategic programme to reposition rail as a backbone of the country’s transport system. The plan includes rehabilitating existing lines, expanding the standard-gauge network and improving links to mining, agricultural and port corridors to ease road congestion and lower logistics costs. The initiative supports Ghana’s broader infrastructure and industrialisation agenda, with emphasis on freight capacity and intercity mobility.
