Ghana: Bank of Ghana bans public use of foreign currency

In a press release available on its website, the Bank of Ghana prohibits the use of foreign exchange by the general public.

« The BoG warns the general public against illegal foreign exchange activities (black market transactions), pricing, advertising, receiving or paying for goods and services in foreign currency in Ghana without the required licence or permission from the Bank of Ghana, » the statement said.

The warning comes as the Ghanaian cedi has lost about 20% of its value against the US dollar since the beginning of the year and 44.3% in the last five years according to BitKE.
