Ethiopia: Seduction Operation of the diaspora

Ethiopia relies on its diaspora to finance the development of the country. In support of these reforms, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who came to power in April 2018, has been encouraging foreign Ethiopians since July 2018 to return to their country of origin to invest, asking them for the equivalent of dollar a day. An online collection system has even been set up to raise the funds. Since then, 1.8 million $ has been raised, according to the advisory board of the Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund (EDTF), the non-profit organization responsible for raising the funds. To appeal to the country’s children, living abroad, is also a way for the country to break with the foreign aid that many of the continent’s states depend on. Today, the Ethiopian diaspora is estimated between 850,000 and 3 million people, including 250,000 in the United States.
