Ethiopia : Grand Renaissance Dam to generate $1bn annually

On 2 September 2025, Ethiopia inaugurated the Grand Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile, Africa’s largest hydroelectric project. With a 5,000 MW capacity, it is expected to earn $1 billion annually to fund further infrastructure, according to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Launched in 2011 at $4 billion, the project raises tensions with Egypt and Sudan.
