Egypt: the water crisis goes beyond the Renaissance Dam issue
Beyond the lengthy negotiations between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia on the conditions under which the Ethiopian Renaissance Grand Dam (GERD) will be filled and operated, Egypt faces inadequate investments, problems of water pollution, socio-spatial distribution following the privatization of the sector, the enormous needs in the rice fields … a reality far removed from the official discourse which never ceases to warn that the GERD could have an impact on the country, stressing that Egypt is largely dependent on the Nile for its freshwater resources.
