Djibouti reaffirms its ambition to sit as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (Press release)
As the 33rd summit of the African Union is being held in Addis Ababa, the Republic of Djibouti reaffirms its ambition, which is already announced at the end of 2016, to sit as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2021-2022. Five of the ten non-permanent members of the Security Council will be elected at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly that will be held in June 2020 in New York. One of these five seats is statutorily reserved for Africa and, in accordance with the tradition of regional rotation adopted by the African Union, it is the turn of East Africa to apply.
In this context, Djibouti formally challenges the process within the African Union that led to Kenya’s competing candidacy.
