Dak’Art: The 15th edition of the contemporary African art event returns to Dakar
Since November 7, the 15th edition of the Dak'Art Biennale of Contemporary African Art has transformed Dakar into a global hub for reflection and creativity. Artists and collectors from around the world have gathered to highlight contemporary African art.
Dakar is living to the rhythm of the 15th edition of the Dak’Art Biennale of Contemporary African Art, which runs until December 7, 2024. Originally scheduled for May, this major artistic gathering remains a key event for contemporary art on the African continent. This year, nearly 70 international artists, divided between the « In » and « Off » sections, are showcasing their works at various venues across the Senegalese capital.
A Biennale at the heart of global challenges
The artistic director of this edition, Salimata Diop, chose to focus the event around the theme « The Wake. » According to her, « climate disasters are accumulating, » and Dakar, located at the heart of these challenges, is the ideal place for collective awareness through art. For Diop, art is a powerful tool for conveying this message and raising public awareness.
The biennale thus offers an immersive experience with works in painting, sculpture, and photography, as well as sound and interactive installations. Among the featured projects is one by artist Nemo Camus, who explores the climate crisis through a sound installation inspired by the testimonies of miners in Manono, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These miners, faced with the realities of mining exploitation, are central to this work, which questions the environmental consequences of resource extraction.
Moroccan artist Ghizlane Sahli, for her part, presents a poignant installation centered around the flower, symbolizing resilience after the trauma of the September 2023 earthquake in Marrakech.
An unmissable event for collectors and Art enthusiasts
The Dak’Art Biennale is also a meeting place for international collectors, gallery owners, and cultural institutions. It is an opportunity for African and international artists to present their works to an engaged audience, concerned with contemporary issues. This 15th edition, highly activist in nature, marks a turning point in the history of this major event, positioning art as a tool for collective awareness.
With nearly 70 artists showcased, spread across the city’s spaces and outdoor installations, the Dak’Art Biennale of Contemporary African Art is more than ever an essential event to discover tomorrow’s artistic visions. For one month, Dakar becomes the epicenter of committed African art, capable of transcending global crises.
An invitation to awakening and reflection through Art.
