Culture : a tribute to Manu Dibango

Papa Groove" had put down his saxophone for good on March 24, 2020. As part of the Fête de la Musique, the Afrique en Marche association is paying tribute to him with the screening of a documentary and a book dedicated to his work.

His music, including the famous « Soul Makossa », toured the world. Often plagiarized but never equaled, Manu Dibango, known as « Papa Groove », the Cameroonian saxophonist, world music icon and staunch Pan-African, imposed his style. He died on March 24, 2020, at the age of 86, of COVID-19. He left behind an immense legacy for generations of music lovers.

The Vincennes association « Afrique en Marche » will pay tribute to him on June 24. The program will include the screening of the documentary « Tonton Manu » in the presence of its director, Thierry Dechilly, and a book signing with Yves Bigot, CEO of TV5 Monde.

« Manu Dibango is an exceptional musician. He has left his mark on every generation. The documentary is an excellent way of understanding the scope of his work, the simplicity of his life and the message of hope and resilience he conveys to all those who dream of making a living from their passion. He is an inspiring role model for young people », explains Marie-Rose Ngonga, vice-president of the association « Afrique en Marche ». « The purpose of this activity is to promote African culture, in order to inspire as many people as possible to take action in the cultural sector. »
