Cotonou Comedy Festival : Benin Aims to Become Africa’s Capital of Comedy

From December 1 to 6, 2025, Cotonou hosted the first edition of the Cotonou Comedy Festival, led by ADAC and the Jokenation Group. More than an artistic event, it represents a strategic push to strengthen cultural diplomacy, boost creative industries, and elevate Benin’s global cultural presence.

Benin is taking a major leap forward in its cultural ambition. With the launch of the Cotonou Comedy Festival, born from an agreement signed on April 8, 2025 between the Agency for the Development of Arts and Culture (ADAC) and Jokenation, the country signals its intention to join the world’s major performing arts stages. The initiative aims to transform comedy into an economic and cultural driver, echoing the spirit of Montreux Comedy in Switzerland.

The “village of laughter,” open and free to all, roots the festival firmly in the city

Throughout six days, Cotonou becomes a hub of creativity and reflection. Master classes for women, a roundtable on African identity, an international gala, showcases for Beninese and African talents, and an evening dedicated to global diasporas all demonstrate the festival’s ambition to build bridges between African artistic scenes and the global industry. The “village of laughter,” open and free to all, roots the festival firmly in the city.

The Cotonou Comedy Festival aims to quickly establish itself as Africa’s leading annual comedy gathering

Beyond artistic performance, the festival carries a strategic vision. “We aim to professionalize and structure a real comedy industry,” ADAC emphasizes, seeing the event as a tool for training, employment, and cultural influence. Jokenation — active across seven festivals worldwide and reaching nearly 8 million followers — brings strong international expertise and visibility.

The Cotonou Comedy Festival aims to quickly establish itself as Africa’s leading annual comedy gathering. At a time when creative industries are becoming central to Africa’s economic future, Benin positions itself within a continental movement that recognizes culture as a key engine of growth.
