Algeria : Sonatrach launches $2.33 billion project to maintain Hassi R’Mel gas production

Algeria’s state-owned energy company Sonatrach has launched a $2.33 billion project to maintain and potentially increase gas production from its giant Hassi R’Mel field, the largest in the country and one of the largest in the world. The project, aimed at offsetting natural depletion, involves building compression stations and upgrading the gas gathering network. It is expected to recover an additional 121 billion cubic meters of gas and support supply to Europe.
