AFRIKAMERA 2024: Berlin welcomes new African narratives
From November 12 to 17, the AFRIKAMERA 2024 festival highlights African cinema in Berlin, with the theme “BELIEVE.”
For its 16th edition, AFRIKAMERA offers a diverse selection of feature and short films, as well as award-winning works by African directors. This festival, which was created to celebrate the richness and diversity of African cinema, has become an essential platform for filmmakers and film lovers from the continent.
The festival’s opening screening will be the film THE VILLAGE NEXT TO PARADISE, a poignant work by Somali director Mo Harawe, which will have its world premiere. This family drama is set to be a highlight, as it is also scheduled for a presentation at the Cannes Film Festival in the “Un Certain Regard” section. This kickoff promises to set the tone for a festival rich in emotions and reflections.
Among the other films on the program, NOME, a film by Guinean Sana Na N’Hada, will explore the tumultuous history of the struggle for independence in Guinea-Bissau through captivating narratives, blending past and present. The short films, notably the AFRIKAMERA SHORTS selection, will also present innovative works from countries such as Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, and Senegal.
“The festival is not limited to screenings: it will also include Q&A sessions with filmmakers, allowing the audience to delve deeper into the themes addressed”
The festival is not limited to screenings: it will also include Q&A sessions with filmmakers, allowing the audience to delve deeper into the themes addressed. DEMBA, the second film by Mamadou Dia, will be presented with a discussion on mental health and family relationships, reflecting the festival’s commitment to addressing contemporary and relevant issues.
AFRIKAMERA 2024 is part of a long tradition of celebrating African cinema, aiming to provide a platform for often underrepresented voices. With special events like the BLACK JEWS – BETA ISRAEL program, which examines the complex history of Judaism in Africa through the lens of Ethiopian Falashas, the festival positions itself as a space for intercultural dialogue.
In addition to screenings, a CINE-CONCERT featuring the film LE FRANC by Djibril Diop Mambéty with live performances will be a unique experience not to be missed. This festival is not only a celebration of cinema but also a meeting space for those passionate about African culture.
AFRIKAMERA 2024 is much more than just a film festival; it is an invitation to explore, understand, and celebrate African culture through the prism of cinema.
