African Banker 2022 Awards: a record number of nominations

The African banking microcosm will crown its kings. While the banking sector is in full mutation on the continent, with a vast consolidation movement and a frantic race for innovation driven by the emergence of new disruptive players who are shaking up pre-established models, the African Banker magazine has revealed the contenders for the various trophies for the year 2022.

A prestigious annual event in the African banking and financial world, the African Banker Awards is part of the official program of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual Meetings, scheduled for May 23-27 in Accra, Ghana, with the theme « Achieving Climate Resilience and a Just Energy Transition for Africa. »

Organized by African Banker magazine and IC Events in cooperation with BusinessinAfrica Events, the African Banker Awards celebrate excellence and best practices in Africa’s banking sector and honor the great successes of African bankers who are creating new economic opportunities for citizens across the continent and inspiring new generations to shape Africa’s future.

« We have the prodigious digital acceleration and FinTechs have become indispensable in the banking sphere »

In addition to the leaders and banks driving the rapid transformation of African finance, the African Banker Awards Committee has added two new categories in 2022: FinTech of the Year and Development Finance Institution (DFI) of the Year. These categories recognize the significant role of Development Finance Institutions as key players in post-pandemic recovery and digital transformation in banking. « We have the prodigious digital acceleration and FinTechs have become indispensable in the banking sphere, » says Omar Ben Yedder, publisher of African Banker magazine and chairman of the Awards Committee.

A total of 64 nominees were selected from among Africa’s most successful banks, financial institutions and technology providers. « We received a record number of nominations for this year’s awards. My favorite categories are Deal of the Year. They show that there are concrete actions to tackle the continent’s most pressing development issues, including energy and infrastructure, » said Omar Ben Yedder, who will deliver a speech at the awards ceremony on the theme of banking sovereignty and greater autonomy to better support institutional growth and development on the continent.
