Africa Basel 2025 : a new platform for contemporary african art in Basel
From June 17 to 22, 2025, Africa Basel will debut at Ackermannshof in the heart of Basel, Switzerland. Coinciding with Art Basel, this boutique fair aims to spotlight contemporary African art and its diaspora, offering an intimate and curated experience.

Africa Basel addresses the persistent underrepresentation of African art in major international fairs. While Art Basel 2025 features only five African galleries among nearly 300 exhibitors, Africa Basel offers a focused alternative: around twenty galleries selected by a distinguished curatorial board, including Azu Nwagbogu (African Artists’ Foundation), Michèle Sandoz (former Art Basel), Serge Tiroche (Africa First), and Greer Valley (Zeitz MOCAA).
Our goal is to foster sustainable engagement and deepen the appreciation of African artistic narratives
explains co-founder Benjamin Füglister
A dedicated platform for African creativity
Set within the historic Ackermannshof, Africa Basel offers an immersive experience away from the hustle of mega-fairs. The program includes thematic exhibitions, spaces dedicated to emerging talents, talks, and artist encounters, all designed to facilitate meaningful exchanges among artists, collectors, and curators.
We believe the era of mega-fairs is coming to an end. Africa Basel favors a focused and intimate approach
notes Füglister
A pivotal moment for African art
Africa Basel’s launch comes amid a global surge in recognition for African art. Figures like Koyo Kouoh, appointed curator of the 2026 Venice Biennale, and Naomi Beckwith, leading Documenta 2027, exemplify this momentum. Africa Basel aligns with this movement, providing a strategic platform for artists from the continent.
