Thierno Alassane Sall , Senegalese Minister of Energy and Development of Renewable Energy and Mohamed Salem Ould Bechir,Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mines agreed on facilities to exploit the Large gas field Grand Tortue/Ahmeyim common to Mauritania and Senegal. These facilities will be located on the ocean, 8 km off the coast of both countries. Note that the gas field Grand Turtle / Ahmeyim, is located 125 kilometers off the coast of both countries. It was discovered in January 2016 and is considered the largest deposit in West Africa with reserves estimated at 450 billion m3. The investment for the development of this field is 10 billion.
Before being signed, this inter-governmental cooperation agreement for the joint development of the field should lead to an environmental and social impact study by Dakar and Nouakchott.
