Rwanda : Poverty down, but inequality remains, says UN report

Nearly 1.5 million Rwandans escaped poverty in seven years, yet inequality persists despite steady 7–8% growth, according to UN Special Rapporteur Olivier De Schutter in a report dated June 3, 2025. He urges greater investment in education, nutrition, and rural farmers, who make up 80% of the poor. With 82% of jobs informal, he recommends boosting tax collection, formalizing work, and introducing a minimum wage—25% of workers still live in poverty. Debt now exceeds 78% of GDP.
Estimated funding needs: several hundred million dollars to strengthen social sectors.
