Annual African Union-United Nations Conference : Guterres calls for justice for African peoples

During the 8th Annual African Union-United Nations Conference in Addis Ababa, António Guterres emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two organizations to implement the Pact for the Future.
« I returned from the Summit of the Future with the awareness that the conditions are now in place for the international community to begin to deliver justice to the African peoples, » said Mr. Guterres.
The Secretary-General highlighted that Africa faces significant obstacles to its development, deeply rooted in its colonial legacy. More recently, the continent had to deal with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, with many countries struggling under heavy debt.
The UN Secretary-General also advocated for reforms to the Security Council and economic justice for Africa, calling for stronger African voices in the international financial architecture.
