Iran : first Iranian president trip to Africa in 11 years

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was welcomed by his counterpart, William Ruto, in Kenya during the first stop of a three-country tour of Africa that kicked off on Wednesday. Raisi referred to Africa as a « continent of opportunities » during a press briefing, emphasizing its potential as a market for Iranian products.

The three-day trip will be the first by an Iranian president to Africa in 11 years. Raisi’s trip to Africa, which will also take him to Uganda and Zimbabwe, represents a bid to diversify economic ties in the face of crippling US sanctions.
