Uganda: Drop in sugar exports
Over the past 3 years sugar exports have fallen by 108 billion shillings, representing a 35% drop in revenues (between 100,000 and 130,000 tonnes, in volume), according to figures from the Bank of Uganda . Export blocks imposed on Ugandan sugar by East African member states on allegations of dumping are believed to be behind the decline. In all cases, Kenya and Tanzania specifically imposed separate blockades on Ugandan sugar on claims that traders were importing and re-exporting cheap sugar to their markets.
