Ghana: EU signs first security and defence partnership with an African country

On March 24, 2026, the European Union and the Ghana signed a Security and Defence Partnership in Accra — the first formal pact of its kind between the EU and an African nation, according to the European External Action Service. Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and Jane Naana Opoku‑Agyemang, Vice‑President of Ghana, formalized cooperation on counter‑terrorism, intelligence sharing and crisis management amid rising jihadist threats in West Africa. The EU also delivered surveillance equipment through the European Peace Facility as part of long‑standing security support to partners.
