Uganda : EU to invest €30M in Nalubaale‑Kiira hydropower rehabilitation

The European Union is set to provide a €30 million (≈ $32 million) grant to Uganda for the rehabilitation of the Nalubaale‑Kiira hydroelectric power complex (380 MW), according to official documentation from the Delegation of the European Union to Uganda and the EU Global Gateway programme. This grant is part of a €170 million Team Europe package designed to bring the facility to technical maturity and unlock further concessional loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD), with the goal of preventing breakdowns, stabilizing electricity supply and lowering energy costs.

The initiative aligns with the Global Gateway 2021‑2027 strategy, which aims to mobilize up to €300 billion of investments in sustainable infrastructure, energy, transport, and digital tools for partner countries.
