The European Union and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have granted a €12 million technical assistance package to Tunisia’s electricity and gas company (STEG) for the ELMED project, the first power interconnection between Tunisia and Italy. The 224-km subsea cable, co-funded through the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, will enhance energy security, integrate renewables, and link Mediterranean power markets. Developed with Italian operator TERNA, ELMED marks a major milestone in the region’s energy transition.
