Guinea-Bissau : Bijagós Archipelago added to UNESCO World Natural Heritage

On July 13, 2025, the Bijagós Archipelago, famed for its exceptional coastal and marine ecosystems, was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Natural Heritage list. The site includes three natural parks — João Vieira and Poilão, Orango, and Urok — biodiversity sanctuaries home to sea turtles, marine hippos, sharks, and mangroves. This collective achievement honors the Bijagós people’s deep spiritual connection with their environment.
